Drains Limited’s drain engineers were sent to Heritage Wharf to replace a broken manhole cover.
Our drain engineers are hot on health and safety, so the first task was to close off the area with safety barriers before any drain repairs could go ahead.
The old manhole cover needed to be cut out and replaced with a new rectangular cast iron man hole cover. To do this our drain engineer cut out a ‘picture frame’ with a saw around the broken manhole before the existing material within the old frame was broken out. Once broken up and excavated, the manhole cover is removed using a mechanical lifting device. Any damaged brickwork that had broken was be replaced and cemented-in before the new manhole cover (in this case a rectangular one) was ready to be fitted. The manhole cover was then bedded in on sand and cement mix and tamped down flush with the existing surface.
Once the cover and frame were in place the area outside of the frame was made good with sand and cement. All of the removed material and debris were then cleared and the site was cleaned to ensure it was left tidy and hazard free.
